It can be tempting think about the database as a static asset. We plan storage capacity, check for corruption, and create & test backup media; these are priority zero responsibilities which all consider the (mostly) at-rest data; but data at-rest is data unused.

Movement of data to and from storage and consumer is what generates value. As data specialists, we must consider a broader view of the data lifecycle - from provisioning of the storage engine through to consumption by and submission from downstream applications.

As a part of whole-lifecycle awareness, we specialize on simplification and exposure of previously obscure components of the stack. Human-understandable representation of architecture is my personal favorite part of infrastructure-as-code solutions. Minification and refinement of this data into self-describing structures is - in my humble opinion - a worthy cause.
